Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has defended his company’s decision to ban President Donald Trump, while acknowledging that the move stems from its failure to promote «healthy» conversations and sets a «dangerous» precedent. The CEO also addressed similar actions taken by other social media companies, such as Facebook (FB) and Snapchat (SNAP), to ban the president. These actions were not coordinated, Dorsey said, but present a challenge for the tech industry.»The check and accountability on this power has always been the fact that a service like Twitter is one small part of the larger public conversation happening across the internet,» he said. «If folks do not agree with our rules and enforcement, they can simply go to another internet service.»
«This concept was challenged last week when a number of foundational internet tool providers also decided not to host what they found dangerous,» he continued.Amazon (AMZN) effectively killed off Parler, a platform favored by the far-right, when it canceled its web hosting contract.The decision to ban the president from Twitter had immediate consequences: Trump lost access to more than 88 million followers, and the move exposed the company to censorship complaints from Republicans. Democrats blasted social media’s role in enabling Trump and warned of new legislation to regulate the tech industry.
What happened was that the network platforms turned the originally decentralised worldwide web into an oligarchically organised and hierarchical public sphere from which they made money and to which they controlled access. That the original, superficially libertarian inclinations of these companies’ founders would rapidly crumble under political pressure from the left was also perfectly obvious, if one bothered to look a little beyond one’s proboscis.
Following the violent far-right rally at Charlottesville in August 2017, Matthew Prince, chief executive of the internet service provider Cloudflare, described how he had responded: ‘Literally, I woke up in a bad mood and decided someone shouldn’t be allowed on the internet.’ On the basis that ‘the people behind the [white supremacist magazine] Daily Stormer are assholes’, he denied their website access to the internet. ‘No one should have that power,’ he admitted. ‘We need to have a discussion around this with clear rules and clear frameworks. My whims and those of Jeff [Bezos] and Larry [Page] and … Mark [Zuckerberg] shouldn’t be what determines what should be online.’
But that discussion had barely begun in 2017. Indeed, many Republicans at that time still believed the notion that FATGA were champions of the free market that required only the lightest regulation. They know better now. After last year’s election Twitter attached health warnings to Trump’s tweets when he claimed that he had in fact beaten Joe Biden. Then, in the wake of the storming of the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters, Twitter and Facebook began shutting down multiple accounts — including that of the President himself, now ‘permanently suspended’ from tweeting. When Trump loyalists declared their intention to move their conversations from Twitter to rival Parler — in effect, Twitter with minimal content moderation — Google and Apple deleted Parler from their app stores. Then Amazon kicked Parler off its ‘cloud’ service, effectively deleting it from the internet altogether. It was a stunning demonstration of power.
With virtual unanimity, leading U.S. liberals celebrated this use of Silicon Valley monopoly power to shut down Parler, just as they overwhelmingly cheered the prior two extraordinary assertions of tech power to control U.S. political discourse: censorship of The New York Post’s reporting on the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop, and the banning of the U.S. President from major platforms. Indeed, one would be hard-pressed to find a single national liberal-left politician even expressing concerns about any of this, let alone opposing it.

Can Twitter exist in a democracy? Donald Trump isn’t the only problem: liberty depends on the virtues social media erodes.
Back in the early 1980s, during the worst period of urban squalor and decay in the United States, a feeling of despair had set in about crime. Could cities ever be made liveable again? Who would want to raise a family in a place with so much everyday disorder and violence?
It was at this point that political scientist James Q. Wilson came up with the theory of Broken Windows, an idea that was to become hugely influential in turning the tide and restoring American cities to civility (much of which has been undone in 2020). Wilson argued that if the authorities crack down on minor incivility – graffiti, fare-dodging, panhandling – then very soon it will start to have an effect on major crimes too. It was to some degree basic common sense – give them an inch and they’ll take a mile – but then the 1960s had been a unique time of unlearning common sense in favour of exciting and fashionable new theories about human behaviour.
Broken Windows works partly because, even in the most violent places, huge amounts of serious crime is committed by a very small percentage of men. In Central American countries such as El Salvador or Honduras, which are plagued by horrific homicide rates, violence is mostly concentrated not just in a few neighbourhoods but even a few streets. Removing only a very small number of men has a drastic effect on wider society.
I often think about Wilson when perusing everyone’s favourite forum of thoughtful political debate, Twitter, which in terms of civility is somewhere around the period of The Warriors or Joker, the nadir of late 70s/early 80s urban decay.
If Twitter were a city it would be the sort of city where the authorities allow people to defecate in public or shoot up outside a school, and then express surprise when middle-class families wish to leave because of “the better quality of life” found in a four-hour commute away exurb.
The situation has been deteriorating for some time, although users of the site have rather adopted a Golden Age myth of a non-existent time when Twitter wasn’t filled with hysterics and fanatics. But this weekend, and with the moral courage of Ecuador or Paraguay declaring war on Germany in February 1945, Twitter finally decided to ban Donald Trump. After years of winding people up, lying, inciting hatred and worse, the outgoing President had finally overstepped the mark on 6 January. Three days later, and his Twitter opus was gone.
To anyone who still believes in liberal democracy, the question of what to do with Donald Trump provides no easy answers – and anyone who says it is simple is a partisan with an axe to grind.
Most people tend to be more favourable to censorship when they think they’re the ones who will do the censoring, rather than being the censored. And censorship, of course, comes in gradations; the government sending goons around to your house for a critical YouTube comment is at the hard end, but being de-platformed by tech monopolies still entails a degree of lost liberty.
Tech monopolies, after all, aren’t like ordinary websites; they have the sort of media power that just didn’t exist before the 21st century, the ability to overthrow governments, to shape the news agenda, to curate our views not just of current affairs but of history, too. In terms of cultural power they are closer in scope to the churches of old than any newspaper.
Conservatives fear giving big tech further control because they believe, with good reason, that big tech is against them; it is controlled by the other sect. Even before Trump and when the Republican Party was fairly normal, employees at Facebook, Twitter, Google and elsewhere were overwhelmingly more likely to be liberal and Democrat-voting – and as with all of these patterns, the same thing applies to Britain, too.
Unfortunately, while Twitter tends to reward and promote provocateurs and narcissists, the real problem is that, like with many American cities in the 1970s, the Twitter police cannot be trusted to be fair.
The platform has a consistent policy of allowing high-follower accounts to get away with extreme incivility, incitement to violence and even racial hatred. It lets them do so for the same reason that bad behaviour is often indulged – because the people doing it are seen as having the right politics, in this case of the progressive variety.
But it’s also the deeper problem of the social media site that, despite its progressive vibe – and it is no more than a vibe – it is obsessively hierarchical. The entire system is designed to signify people’s status; not just the follower count, but the very idea of blue ticks which initiate a modern-day noblesse de la robe. Blue ticks were supposed to be used for authentication — to distinguish real users from painfully unfunny parody accounts — but they are quite clearly treated as an endorsement. That is why conservative Douglas Murray had to have two bestselling books and 200,000 followers before being raised to the nobility of the blue tick, a far higher bar than for progressive writers.
The problem with Twitter is that it mixes this essentially pre-modern aristocratic mindset with a radical egalitarianism. It wants to be a democracy without the values necessary for a democracy, including restraint and civility; these are all things that America’s founding fathers well understood. They saw that “virtue” was necessary for democracy — and being an ostentatiously virtuous Christian did not excuse anyone from obeying ordinary rules of behaviour.
Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter have blocked the president’s social-media accounts. Apple, Google, and Amazon have stopped hosting Parler, a social-media alternative that’s become popular among Trump devotees. The PGA has cut ties with Trump’s National Golf Course in New Jersey. Stripe has stopped processing payments for the Trump-campaign website. Reddit has banned the r/DonaldTrump subreddit, Twitch has disabled a streaming channel associated with him, Shopify has terminated stores affiliated with him, YouTube has announced that it will remove all channels that post videos questioning the outcome of the election, and TikTok and Pinterest are removing posts with hashtags like #stormthecapitol and #StoptheSteal. Meanwhile, several companies, including the chemical corporation Dow, have announced that they will not donate money to anyone who objected to the certification of the presidential vote.
Corporate America is running so far to the left of the GOP because both corporations and parties try to win the future. Corporations win the future by appealing to consumers, while parties win the future by appealing to voters. At this moment in U.S. history, younger Americans and college-educated Americans have moved sharply left, while Republicans have come to represent an older, whiter, less-educated American cohort that has moved sharply right. In response, companies have followed their customers and employees to the left, and the GOP has followed its base to the right.

Πάνω από 8.000 είναι παιδιά μικρότερα των 5 ετών. Το al Hawl είναι το λίκνο του νέου χαλιφάτου, διαφημίζει μία ομάδα βρετανών γυναικών, οι Caged Pearls, που μαζεύει χρήματα για το χαλιφάτο. Οι συνθήκες βέβαια είναι άθλιες στα στρατόπεδα. Παιδιά πεθαίνουν από αρρώστιες και θάβονται βιαστικά, τα μεγαλύτερα που έχουν προλάβει τη «διαπαιδαγώγηση» του ισλαμικού χαλιφάτου επιτίθενται και βιάζουν τα μικρότερα. Τα ευρωπαϊκά κράτη δεν δέχονται να επαναπατρίσουν ούτε καν τους δικούς τους υπηκόους από αυτά τα στρατόπεδα, και οι εκπρόσωποι των Κούρδων που επιτηρούν τα camps δηλώνουν ότι δεν μπορούν πλέον να ελέγξουν την κατάσταση. Η εικόνα των πεινασμένων, ταλαιπωρημένων, εγκαταλελειμμένων αυτών οικογενειών γίνεται ο καλύτερος τρόπος προπαγάνδας του ισλαμικού κράτους. Η δε ειρωνεία της ιστορίας είναι ότι οι εγκλεισμένοι σε αυτά τα στρατόπεδα είναι συνήθως και αυτοί με τις λιγότερες διασυνδέσεις με το ισλαμικό χαλιφάτο, καθώς οι άλλοι πρόλαβαν και ξέφυγαν.
Μέχρι και οι Ρώσοι άρχισαν να κάνουν πλάκα και προτείνουν στην Ευρώπη να τους δώσουν εμβόλια για το γ΄τρίμηνο του 2021. Αυτή είναι η εμβέλεια και η δυναμική της Ε.Ε. Όταν έχεις εδώ και δεκαετίες αποθεώσεις τις εταιρείες και κάνεις τσαμπουκά μόνο σε Γιωργάκηδες, Βενιζέλους και Τσίπρες, νομίζεις ότι είσαι υπερδύναμη. Εμ, δεν είσαι. Είσαι απλά μία νεοφιλελεύθερη καρικατούρα, που αρέσκεται να βρίζει τη Ρωσία, τις ΗΠΑ, την Κίνα ή τη Βραζιλία. Ευτυχώς, και καθόλου τυχαία, οι χώρες που δακτυλοδείχνει η Ευρώπη είναι οι χώρες που και πιο ψύχραιμες είναι στην πανδημία και θα συνεχίσουν να ζουν και μετά από αυτή. Εμείς εδώ θα τη βγάλουμε με λογικές Βελγίου και #metoo# ας προσέχαμε. Από αυτούς θα ζητήσουμε βοήθεια όταν θα μπουκάρει ο Ερντογάν;

Ανήκω στην ίδια γενιά με τον Γιώργο Κιμούλη. Αυτή η γενιά παρέλαβε μια ολόκληρη μυθολογία για τις σκληρές πρόβες, τις απαιτήσεις σκηνοθετών που συχνά γίνονταν ακραίες, για ομηρικούς καυγάδες μεταξύ των συντελεστών μιας παράστασης και άλλα πολλά. Η δική μας γενιά συνέχισε σε μεγάλο βαθμό κάπως στα ίδια- ίσως και σε χειρότερα- ακόμα χνάρια, γιατί η όλη εποχή εξελίχθηκε γενικά χειρότερα. Εδώ και μια τουλάχιστον δεκαετία τα πράγματα αλλάζουν σε τρομακτικό βαθμό. Το θέατρο φυσικά δεν μπορεί να μείνει ανεπηρέαστο. Αν τα πράγματα θα γίνουν καλύτερα ή χειρότερα θα το δείξει η ιστορία. Η νέα εποχή μάς επιτρέπει να μιλάμε. Αυτό ίσως πραγματικά να είναι καλύτερο και υγιέστερο. Και σίγουρα θα είναι υγιέστερο να μιλάμε τη στιγμή που υφιστάμεθα την οποιαδήποτε αδικία ή παραβίαση των αυτονόητων δικαιωμάτων μας. Αυτό σε μεγάλο βαθμό δεν γινόταν για πολλούς λόγους τα προηγούμενα χρόνια. Ας το δούμε με ψυχραιμία και κατανόηση. Ας πάψουμε να κατηγορούμε με ευκολία θύτες και θύματα. Κάθε γενιά χρειάζεται ένα «μπράβο», έναν έπαινο, για ό,τι προσέφερε, και οφείλει ένα συγγνώμη για τα λάθη που σίγουρα διέπραξε, γιατί είναι αδύνατον να μην κάνει λάθη. Ας θεσπίσουμε από την αρχή κάποιους καινούργιους κανόνες για το θέατρο. Και για τη θεατρική εκπαίδευση και για το επάγγελμα. Το απαιτεί η νέα εποχή [πηγή]
Είναι οι άνθρωποι που δεν τολμούν το αυτονόητο: να καταδικάσουν την «τσογλανίαση» του Κιμούλη ως τέτοια και να υπερασπιστούν τον τρόπο διδασκαλίας που και στο θέατρο και αλλού, και παντού, προϋποθέτει υποταγή, πειθαρχία και «βγάλε επιτέλους τον σκασμό». Για αυτούς τα πάντα είναι κανόνες, οριοθετήσεις, μη μου άπτου και χαδάκια. Είναι εναλλακτικοί και μας έχουν ζαλήσει τον έρωτα. Οι προσβολές και η «καταπάτηση των δικαιωμάτων» είναι που παράγουν τέχνη και πολιτισμό, όχι το σούρσιμο και η γκρίνια…..
Πέρα από την εγγενή χαζομάρα όλων αυτών των κοριτσιών (κατ’ ευφημισμό) που θέλαν να είναι ηθοποιοί της τηλεόρασης και θεάτρων (τύπου…Σεφερλή), και τις ταλαιπώρησαν, τις εξευτέλισαν κτλ., την στιγμή που όλοι μας και όλοι τους ξέρουν εδώ και πολλά χρόνια τι συμβαίνει στις τηλεοπτικές παραγωγές, είναι και μία ένδειξη του πόσο βαθιά στο μεδούλι της νεοελληνίδας «γκόμενας» έχει περάσει το ψευτο- αφήγημα της παρενόχλησης. Με τα μυαλά (που δεν έχουν) θα διογκώσουν ακόμα περισσότερο την απέχθεια απέναντι σε αυτές- πλέον κανείς δεν θα ασχολείται καν-, οπότε μετά θα αρχίσουν οι γκρίνιες για την έλλειψη φλερτ και επαφής. Ο δρόμος για τις γάτες και τα σκυλάκια τους θα είναι ολότελα ορθάνοιχτος. Κατά ανάλογο τρόπο, η λύσσα των «ορθών» για το αδέκαστο Var στο ποδόσφαιρο, αναπόφευκτα και νομοτελειακά θα οδηγήσει στην πλήρη απαξίωση του αθλήματος. Οι γκόμενες και οι κάγκουρες του ποδοσφαίρου (και άλλοι πολλοί) δεν μπορούν να καταλάβουν το νόημα της επαφής, της σχέσης, της σφαλιάρας, της αντίδρασης, του ναι μεν αλλά, του λίγο έτσι και λίγο αλλιώς, του τσαμπουκά, ζουν σε ένα άλλο σύμπαν που θα είναι αντισηπτικό όπως και οι ζωές τους. Θα μείνουν ευνούχοι. Οι πραγματικοί βιαστές και σαδιστές γελάνε πολύ με όλα αυτά….
Οι στατιστικές δείχνουν ότι ημικρανίες καταλαμβάνουντους διευθυντές στις ΗΠΑ και γενικώς στις προηγμένες χώρες.
Ανεξηγήτως, όταν προάγονται στην ανώτερη θέση, το σχεδόν ήσυχο κεφάλι τους αρχίζει να συγκρατεί την άμμο των κομπιούτερ, των τηλεφώνων, των τέλεξ, και αρχίζει να βαραίνει. Όταν κολυμπάνε, πάνε κατευθείαν στο βυθό. Όταν περπατάνε, εχουν απόκλιση προς τα δεξιά και κάτω. Δεν τολμούν να κοιτάξουν από μπαλκόνι, τους περιμένει η άσφαλτος. Νιώθουν ασφαλείς μόνο πίσω από τους γυάλινους τοίχους του κτιρίου.
Με κεφάλι σφιγμένο από καλώδια και μουδιασμένο από προγραμματισμούς μπαίνουν στο ασανσέρ του ουρανοξύστη και ανεβαίνουν. Αριθμοί, υπογραφές, φωνές, και ψοφάνε τα ψαράκια στη βιτρίνα του γραφείου τους. Κοιτάζουν στις οθόνες τα χρώματα να αναβοσβήνουν και βλέπουν ηλιοβασιλέματα. Βγάζουν τα παπούτσια και ατενίζουν τα πόδια τους για ώρες. Τώρα τους πνίγουν οι καπνοί των πούρων και όλα είναι μόνο χθεσινά. Ούτε θυμούνται εκείνο το απόγευμα, που σαν πεπόνι ανοιγμένο έμοιαζε η αγκαλιά της. Με κουμπί γίνεται ο απέναντι τοίχος κρεβάτι. Τα παυσίπονα στο χέρι κι η νύχτα δεν έρχεται. Μέσα σ’ αυτή την απομόνωση, νομίζουν ότι κατευθύνουν τη ροή των γεγονότων. Ισχύουν ακόμη οι παλιοί μου στίχοι:’ ‘Ακόμα δεν πραγματοποιήθηκε το παιδικό μου όνειρο.
